Überwinde deine Angst
Dear Fear: Creativity and I are going on a road trip together. I understand you’ll be joining us, because you always do. I acknowledge that you beliebe you have an important job to do in my life, and that you take your job seriously. Apparently your job is to induce complete panic whenever I’m about to do anything interesting. Keep doing your job, if you feel you must. But I wil also be doing my job on this road trip, which is to work hard and stay focused. And Creativity will be doing its job, which is to remain stimulating and inspiring. There is plenty of room in this vehicle for all of us. Make yourself at home but understand this: Creativity and I are the only ones who will be making any decisions along the way. I recognize and respect that you are a part of this family – but your suggestions will never be followed. You’re allowed to have a seat but you’re not allowed to have a vote. Above all, you are absolutely forbidden to drive.
Das Bild von ihrer Angst, welches Gilbert in diesem Buch beschreibt, hat mein Denken über die Angst stark verändert. Immer öfters versuche ich mir nun bewusst zu machen, dass die Angst mitfahren darf, aber eben nur auf dem Rücksitz.
Sei offen und zugänglich für Ideen
Ideas are driven by a single impulse: to be made manifest. Ideas spend eternity swirling around us, searching for available and willing human partners. The idea will try to get your attention. But if you don’t pay attention – it will move on to someone else.
When you say no, nothing happens at all. Mostly, people say no. Most people just walk around and say no all the time, every day. Then again, someday you just might say yes.
Wenn ich eine Idee habe, und die ersten Zweifel daran auftauchen oder ich merke dass ich mit der Idee prokrastiniere, dann frage ich mich: Wie würde ich mich fühlen, wenn ich die Idee nicht weiterverfolge und sie dann in ein paar Monaten bei jemandem Anderen sehen würde?
Bei dieser Vorstellung merke ich schnell ob mir eine Idee wirklich wichtig ist oder nicht.
Distanziere dich von deiner Arbeit
The Romans didn’t believe that an exceptionally gifted person was a genius; they believed they had a genius. The idea of an external genius helps to keep the artist’s ego in check, distancing him somewhat from the burden of taking full credit or full blame for the outcome of his work.
Du bist kein Genie, du hast eins! Grossartige Neuigkeiten – du musst deine Ideen gar nicht bewerten, du kannst deinem Genie vertrauen. Das nimmt den Druck draus.
Warte nicht auf die Erlaubnis
You do not need anybody’s permission to live a creative life.
Kennst du das, du denkst dir vielleicht manchmal: Wer bin ich eigentlich, dass ich denke ein aussergewöhnliches Leben führen zu können?
Das ist Bullshit! Es braucht keine Erlaubnis und keine besonderen Voraussetzungen. Du darfst ein aussergewöhnliches und kreatives Leben führen, du solltest sogar! Ich gebe dir hiermit die Erlaubnis. Keine Ausreden mehr!
Nenne das Kind beim Namen
Defining yourself as a creative person begins by defining yourself. Stand up tall and say it aloud, whatever it is: I’m a writer. I’m a photographer. I’m a designer.
Ich weiss, das kann schwerfallen. Vor allem den unsicheren Scanner*innen unter uns. Die schon selbst genug an sich zweifeln. Da kann es ganz schön viel Mut brauchen, um stolz zu sagen „Ich bin eine Künstlerin!“ Aber probier es mal aus, und schau wie das alles verändert.
Du musst das Rad nicht neu erfinden und die Welt nicht retten
You are not required to save the world with your creativity. Your art doesn’t have to be original, it doesn’t even have to be important. It is okay to work just for fun.
Hör auf zu jammern
Stop complaining. Of course it is difficult to create things, if it wasn’t, everyone would be doing it. When you are complaining you are scaring away inspiration.
Es wird nicht immer leicht sein, deiner Kreativität zu folgen. Und das ist auch okay so. Wo grosse Freude ist, ist auch immer Leid. That’s Life. Get over it.
Sei beharrlich und bleib dran
It is a simple but generous rule of life that whatever you practice, you will improve at.
Frustration is not an interruption of your process, it is the process. The fun part is wonderful, but these are just short moments. How you manage yourself between those bright moments, when things aren’t going well, is a measure of how devoted you are to your vocation and how equipped you are for the weird demands of creative living.
Deine Kreativität muss nicht dein Vollzeitjob sein
There is no dishonor in having a job.
You can get up at 5o clock in the morning in order to work on your novels before going off on your real-life career
Nicht jedes kreative Hobby, nicht jede Passion muss ein Job sein und Geld einbringen. Die Kreativität darf auch einfach nur dazu sein dich auszutoben und Spass zu machen.
Nutze jede freie Minute
Even if you have only fifteen minutes a day alone with your creativity, take it.
„Keine Zeit dafür“ ist immer nur eine Ausrede. Alles eine Frage der Prioritäten. Lieber 15 Minuten am Tag als gar keine.
Werde deinen Perfektionismus los
Forget about perfect. We don’t have time for perfect. In any event, perfection is unachievable: it’s a myth and a trap and a hamster wheel that will run you to death.
Der Perfektionismus hindert uns oft daran, überhaupt anzufangen. Finde heraus wie du besser mit deinem Perfektionismus umgehen kannst und dich nicht mehr von ihm aufhalten lässt.
Gib einen F*ck was andere von dir und deiner Arbeit halten
People are mostly just thinking about themselves. People don’t have time to worry about what you’re doing, or how well you’re doing it, because they’re all caught up in their own dramas.
Vertraue auf deine Kreativität
Why would creativity not love you? It came to you, didn’t it? It worked itself into you, asking for your attention and your devotion. It filled you with the desire to make and do interesting things.
Sei einfach du selbst und mach das was dir Spass macht
Go be whomever you want to be, then. Do whatever you want to do. Pursue whatever fascinates you and brings you to life. Create whatever you want to create – and let it be stupendously imperfect, because it’s exeedingly likely that nobody will even notice. And that’s awesome.
